Tagging onto John's comment as it helped me the most across the forums. The new oem speedometer cable will not fit 1990 Miatas (mine is manual as well) without modification. The new speedometer cable has 2 additional static winglets, one will need to be cut off to fit. Not sure if later years have notches in the hole that help place the firewall connection where it's supposed to go (thus allowing the static winglets to fit). But the 90 miatas are just a circle. (See photo of the old original speedometer cable with just 2 winglets instead of 4 on the newer ones) 5 stars because I honestly can't find out who i got the cable from 😅 but it is oem!
Everything I needed to replace my timing belt, and then some - I left my front crank seal alone since I have no evidence of leaks and prefer not to deal with getting the crank gear off if I don't have to. Valve cover gasket was branded "kibi" and made in Japan. I did not experience any issues with the tab on the tensioner pulley, as reported by another reviewer. I ordered the water pump at the same time, and as noted for that kit, I did find the belt a little tight installing it onto the gears, but not enough to prevent it going on. I didn't need to clearance anything.
Ordered this along with timing belt kit. It looks and feels like a quality pump. I used the gaskets included with no extra sealant. Only been a couple of days, but no leaks detected. Be aware, this pump has a solid round pulley boss, unlike the OEM style which is a rounded 3 prong design. What this means is that the bolt which secures the timing belt cover directly behind the pulley can't be inserted with the timing cover in place. You'll need to slide the bolt into that hole first, then fit the timing cover into place. Then, you'll need to use a wrench to tighten that bolt since a socket won't fit over it.
5-stars for how it works and improves the Miata ND. No more immediate disconnect when shutting off ignition (say while on the phone, or listening to music, or just pulling over to admire the view. Be aware, the install is "plug and play", or better said, "unplug factory, and then plug and play the MX5things cable. Extremely tight area to work in and hard to get factory plugs out. But if you can do it will be worth it. Check out Youtube videos for suggestions. Installed in a MX5 ND2
This was such a simple thing to do which really made a noticeable difference in the way the car feels on the road. It did have to use the little spacer sticker to get the fit I wanted. But everything sounds and feels great.
Echoing what others have said, if you're thinking about doing this, buy it. I'm a really big fan of the actual R&D Flyin Miata does and am incredibly grateful for their online content as a resource as well, so this being my choice of intake was a no-brainer. Advice for the install, if you buy or have the right tools, making the hole in the firewall is the easiest part. I bought a punch for the initial hole prior to drilling ($6), a scratch awl to outline the hole ($5), had a set of standard drill bits (~$15), bought the necessary 1 3/8'' hole saw ($7), and had a used sawzall I bought previously on FB marketplace. The most "difficult" part for me was pressing the bolt holding the cruise control down, whilst screwing on the bolt head above the driver's side wheel. If you have a cruise control NB like me, you will have to do the cruise control relocation process. If the relocation is confusing to you, it's essentially just shoving the cruise control down and behind the clutch master cylinder. You are just bolting the big black sphere in a new spot, plugging it in, then making sure both lines can still reach it and are out of the way. My entire install took around 2 hours being meticulous, and the workspace couldn't be any easier to access. I was smiling and laughing during the test drive after the install. The intake noise for me is most noticeable at exactly 4,000 RPM, and specifically when you have the throttle wide open. Can you feel the 5 horsepower? Do you feel better when you knock on wood? It certainly gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Buy this and get a warm fuzzy feeling. Good luck with your install.
Easy installation, clean appearance and improved protection
I was riding around in a 99 nb1 with 102,xxx miles and original suspension. Needless to say, it was shot. Honestly, anything would’ve been better than what I had. Every bump felt like flying off the edge of the Grand Canyon and surviving.
The whole kit is a nice compliment to everything. I am fairly mechanically inclined, so install was easy enough. The directions were decent… but once you remove and exam the old set up, you can then visualize better how to reassemble. My stock bump stops were gone… zero, nothing lol
Getting the nut and lock washer on was an absolute nightmare. I got lucky on the first one, my wife helped with the second and then she said “can’t you clamp this somehow?” So, this isn’t probably “correct” but it works great. Refer to the photo. I had enough room to start the nut without the washer. The issue was the bushing needed smashed down more than we could do by hand. So I ran the nut down without the washer to smash the bushing, clamped with vise grips, then removed the nut, added the lock washer, and then tightened back down.
Immediately after install, the steering itself felt “tight.” I assumed this was due do suspension geometry changes and the need for an alignment. I wanted to let this settle just a little before alignment, so I drove like 30-40 miles. It was not a great drive. The rear wheels almost “hopped” on acceleration. It never did that before. Honestly, I was a little discouraged.
I parked it until the alignment shop could get me in. I aligned it to the recommended specs and now the car is driving great. The steering felt back to normal again. Long story short, don’t under estimate how much an alignment is needed afterwards.
Overall, I’m happy now with the way this rides. The bumps are smooth compared to before. The car still rattles a little, but I think all the control arm bushings are probably shot and on my list too. My biggest compliment is the car sits so much nicer visually. The wheel gaps are less and it looks much better.
