Description

In-car phone mounts are a dime a dozen, but they're all a bit clunky, especially in a small Miata. Suction cup on the windshield? Glue on the dash? There's a better way! These pieces replace one of the "eyeball" vents (any of them) and give you a place to connect a RAM mount. RAM mounts open up a world of different mounts. Basic arms to hold a phone? Wireless charger mount? Lap timer mount? It's up to you.

There are two versions of this mount, recessed and proud. The proud mount has the RAM mount proud of the vent, which allows for lots of freedom in where the mount ends up. It's also more expensive, bulkier, and pushes whatever you use farther away (rearward) from the dash. The recessed version is the opposite - more limited in where the mount ends up, but a cleaner install and closer to the dash. The recessed version might require that you replace the thumb nut with a normal nut (1/4-20 nylock) for clearance reasons. Check out the pictures for more details.

Bear in mind that both of these will move a tick, as the car goes over bumps, but nothing at all unreasonable. While these are very strong, there is a limit - these should work fine with a smaller lap timer, but, might not survive a larger and heavier one driven on a rough (e.g., lots of curbs) track. This also applies to adjustments. The attachments can apply a lot of leverage, so be sure to fully loosen the arm before trying to adjust its angle.

You'll need "B size" (which is a 1" diameter ball) accessories, which you can find here. The shortest arm possible is probably going to be your best bet.

Survived Baja

Used one of these little guys to hold phone during 4000km of offroading in Baja. Never had an issue. Eventually baking in sun for a 2 years seemed to make it brittle and failed. Extremely happy with it.

It looks like an alien arm.

But it works great! I've had ram mounts for my motorcycles so this was a big selling point for me. Good placement and hasn't fallen out yet.

It's a Little Pricey, but...

The mount clicks solidly into the dash. A perfect fit. I paired the recessed mount with RAM's Quick Grip XL and short arm connector and loved how the assembly made the most of the MX-5's limited space. Best of all, everything still looks integrated. A clunky dash-mounted phone holder would certainly ruin the beauty of the dashboard's design. I'm very happy with the setup and haven't seen anything else that comes close to it.

Clean solution

Just like the product description mentions, I wanted to avoid suction cup or glue-based solutions. This fits perfectly! I bought the recessed version and I'm using the shortest arm (RAM-B-201U-A) with the Quick-Grip XL Phone Holder (RAM-HOL-PD4-238AU). I have a large phone (S23 Ultra) that I use for navigation and the device is perfectly safe. It does shake a little bit - nothing dramatic, but I wouldn't use it for video. I do recommend using the Quick-Grip style of phone mount instead of the X-Grip version if you drive on rough pavement.

Wish the fit was more secure

The vent mount was easy to install as it snapped right into place. Unfortunately, the fit is not very secure. I found that when adjusting the angle of my phone, it didn't take much force to get the mount to twist and pop out. So take heed when FM says "The attachments can apply a lot of leverage, so be sure to fully loosen the arm before trying to adjust its angle," the key words being "fully loosen." Also, I was hoping the recessed mount and shorter arm would do a better job of limiting vibration, but there's still a decent amount of shake even with normal driving. My conclusion: the mount's performance doesn't justify the cost of the mount plus the RAM accessories.

David was a great help here. We reached out about this review, and worked through a few design changes to get the fit perfect - it turns out that the fit is slightly different between NA and NB. We updated the design to mount solidly in the NB, and it still works great in the NA.
