Description

A great street or autocross package. Only Flyin' Miata offers a caliper upgrade that will fit under 13" wheels or stock ones - and only Flyin' Miata offers a rear caliper upgrade that retains the parking brake (although that requires 15" wheels). This is what Keith runs on his street Miata, and he loves it.

Up front, we replaced the stock single-piston iron caliper with a light and stiff aluminum four-piston Powerlite caliper. That's responsible for a 4 lb weight loss per side. It's compact enough to fit around the small Miata discs, but is nice and stiff and gives even pressure across the 5 square inch pad. Since the 1.38" pistons are properly sized, the stock pedal feel will not change. Porterfield, Hawk, Carbotech, Performance Friction and Wilwood all offer a full range of pads to choose from.

In the rear, we install a version of the same caliper with 1" pistons. This rear setup does generate more braking power than stock, so you will see a shift in balance towards the rear.

You have two options for the rear brakes:

  • Built-in parking brake. This is the least expensive and lightest (drops about 3 lbs per corner!), but the parking brake isn't very strong, definitely not strong enough for drifting. There's a 3 lb weight loss per side here, for a total weight loss of 14 lbs of unsprung weight.
  • Separate parking brake caliper. This kit puts two separate calipers on each rear wheel, a four-piston Powerlite for your foot brakes and a mechanical MC4 for your parking brake. There's a slight weight penalty over stock (about .5 lbs per corner, so 7 lbs of weight loss for the entire kit), but you get a real parking brake and the stiff Powerlite caliper for your foot brakes. Note that if you choose grey calipers, the parking brake caliper will actually be silver. It's not dramatically different than the grey of the Powerlite, but it's definitely not a perfect match. Note that this option is only available with 11" rotors.

Weight note: The drop in weight quoted here assumes that you're sticking with the same diameter rotors that you currently have. If you go up to a larger rotor size, the weight savings won't be as significant due to the increased rotor mass.

What really makes the caliper special are the custom alterations that allow it to work with a handbrake. This makes it eligible for many race classes that require a functional parking brake. That's right, it's SCCA legal.

The kit includes a brake proportioning valve so you can dial in the perfect balance for your car. 2001-05 ABS cars use electronic brake distribution, so you'll want to delete that option.

We ship the kit with Wilwood BP-20X compound pads in the front, which are a good street/autocross choice and will even stand up to track use. The rears are a BP-10.

This version is designed to use either the stock 10" 1994-02 or stock 11" 2001-05 Sport rotor size (rotors not included). If you have a car with different rotor sizes, all you'll need are the correct rotors to install this on your car.

This kit will fit under a wide variety of wheels. The parking brake means you can't use factory 14" wheels, but most 15" wheels should fit. The 11" setup tends to fit a few more wheels due to the placement of the caliper. Don't make assumptions, unless you know for sure, use our templates to check.

Front:
10" 1994-02
11" 2001-05

Rear:
10" 1994-02
11" 2001-05

These come in hard-anodized grey for the finish. It's hard-anodized to make the coating very durable and resistant to changes due to temperature. It's important to note that the shades of grey will likely not match perfectly. We can't accept returns due to mismatched caliper colors. If you'd like your calipers to match perfectly, please choose one of our big brake kits with the red powder coat option.

The kit includes:

  • Wilwood Powerlite 4-piston calipers and Wilwood BP-20X pads front
  • Wilwood Powerlite 4-piston calipers and Wilwood BP-10 pads rear
  • stainless braided lines front and rear
  • FM proportioning valve kit (if selected)
  • parking brake cables (built-in parking brake version only, separate parking brake caliper version reuses your stock cables)

Please note that both the front and rear brake lines are unique to these calipers. If you currently have stainless lines for stock calipers, they will not work.

You gotta read this.

There is always the question of weather or not to go the make it work route or just get the ultimate. And let me tell you right here chose flyin Miata because they are the ultimate. Not only in quality products but in tech support.
First and foremost flyin Miatas costumer support is probably better than any support I have ever talked to for any company. Not only are they so freaking nice but theyre all knowledgeable, they live and breath Miatas and they are always happy to help. I had a small issue(nothing wrong with the kit just a weird nuance) with one of my orders and I called flyin Miatas tech support. I got connected with Nick and he went above and beyond, absolutely blew me away. You could tell he really cared that I wasnt getting it to work and he helped in anyway he could. He honestly saved my last event of the season!
Second of all, the brake kit is perfect. And I dont mean like kinda sorta gotta make it work. I mean perfect. They thought of everything. Everything fits perfect, everything looks nice, everything works well. Its been the easiest and most thought out kit Ive had for a car. If youre having trouble with ur stock 20+ year old calipers or you just want to upgrade, get this kit, its worth it. It wont give you 30 trips to Home Depot. It just works like you want it to.

Very nice kit, but a couple things to be aware of

I got the 4 wheel kit for my Mazdaspeed Miata with the upgraded 6 piston calipers in the front and the Wilwood 4 piston calipers in the rear. The kit is high quality and fit and finish is excellent as with nearly all of the FM products.

As FM lists in the description, the BP-10 pads are STREET pads. If you track your car you will need something else if you have any experience on track at all. After purchase, I talked with a Wilwood rep who insisted the BP-10's would work fine for light track use for a car as light as the Miata. I can confirm the BP-10's made it only a few laps before overheating. I run the BP-30's now and they are fine at the track. Take FM's advice and get upgraded pads for track use.

The 6 piston caliper that comes with the kit appears to be the Wilwood Forged Dynapro 6A. The big problem with this caliper is it has a fixed mount bridge on the top of the caliper. This means quick pad swaps from the top of the caliper (like 95% of Wilwood calipers) won't work with this particular caliper. You have to remove the caliper to swap out pads. It takes longer than pad swaps with the OEM calipers. This is not ideal if you swap pads for street / track use. In that instance you should stick with the 4 piston fronts or ask FM if there is an alternate 6-piston caliper available.

Note from FM: We used to use the Dynapro 6, which has a removable bridge bolt. However, it is significantly less rigid with a bad pedal feel and was prone to knockback. The 6A is more awkward for pad changes but is a much better caliper under hard use. It's only two bolts to pull the caliper if you want to change pads.

Check your fillings

This is an excellent kit that is a substantial upgrade. My combination is the 4 piston front and rear using 2002 Sport rotors with and the emergency brake feature. My Miata brakes was okay, these are impressive. This kit will require you to relearn your foot because they can stop hard.

Some install notes: I'd urge FM to look through and update the install PDF, while I figured it out it was a touch confusing. More pictures for us simple monkeys.

Also you may need to arch the spring clips to account for pad rattle, a easy fix.

Last but not least, installing the emergency brake cable was a slice of the warm afterlife unto itself using a creeper, strongly recommend you find a lift to get access for this portion of the install if getting the emergency brake option.

Just at a month in, very happy with the performance of these brakes and can recommend them.
