Description

There are a bewildering array of brake upgrades for the Miata. We've tried to simplify things for you by only specifying the best components.

Wilwood makes the calipers in these kits, but these are not Wilwood kits. This particular mix of components - especially the rear - is exclusive to Flyin' Miata. There may be less expensive options out there, but there are none better. And when it comes to brakes, you want the good stuff.

To start, here's a specific list of what's included. There are lots more details below the list.

  • Front big brake kit with brackets, stainless steel brake lines, four-piston Wilwood calipers, and two-piece Wilwood Spec-37 rotors
  • Bridge bolts for the front calipers to make them as stiff as possible
  • Rear Porterfield R4-S pads and stainless steel brake lines for your stock calipers
  • Rear 11" single-piece rotors (choose plain or slotted)
  • If you have a non-Sport ('94-'01 and some '02 and '03) Miata, we include brackets to allow you to use 11" rear rotors with your stock calipers. Sport '01-'03 cars, and ALL '04-'05 cars already use 11" rear rotors, so no brackets are necessary. Note that this kit won't fit '90-'93 Miatas, for those cars we recommend our Stage 4 or 5 Big Brake Kits.
  • Optionally, a brake proportioning valve (read more below).

All of our big brake kits use Wilwood calipers up front, this one uses Dynapro calipers specifically. This caliper is stronger and stiffer than the older Dynalite found in many kits. The advantage is a firmer pedal and easier modulation with a much better pedal feel - and of course, it means that more of your braking effort goes into braking instead of just deforming the caliper!

The piston sizes in the calipers have all been chosen for compatibility with the Miata's master cylinder. There's no need to change out your master cylinder. As an added bonus, pad changes are almost ridiculously easy. There's no reason to run a compromise brake pad, just pop in your track pads when you put on your track wheels. The standard front pad with the kit is the Wilwood BP-10, which is a street and autocross pad. The rear pad is a similar Porterfield R4S. You'll probably want more aggressive front pads such as our BP-20 or BP-40 for track use. We're unable to remove pads from the kit.

The front calipers are wrapped around a 2-piece rotor specifically designed for this application. This is a slotted rotor made in the US from Wilwood's proprietary Spec 37 compound. This metal gives a very long life as well as dimensional stability under rapid temperature changes. It's the best rotor we could find, so it's standard on all our kits.

In the front, you'll save up to five pounds (Sport brakes to four-piston BBK) per corner. If you start with smaller rotors the weight savings will still be significant, but not quite as much.

For 1994-2001 (non-Sport), we use custom brackets of our own design to space the stock rear calipers outboard. They're designed to mount to the same machined surface as the stock caliper, not to an inconsistent cast surface like some others we've seen. If you have a 2001-2005 Sport, you already have 11" rotors, so you don't need the custom brackets. You get to save some money, but still get the better pads and lines.

For the rear rotors, you have your choice between StopTech high-performance slotted rotors, Centric premium plain rotors, or our favorite, two-piece Wilwood rotors. The two-piece rotors have slots (and aesthetics) that match the front rotors, and they save 1.7 lbs in total! None of them will rust (on non-friction surfaces) and they're made to tighter tolerances than others. Again, stainless brake lines are included as are high-performance brake pads.

To ensure that you're using these brakes to their fullest potential, we also offer an adjustable brake proportioning valve, which is strongly recommended for cars that don't have Sport brakes (optional on 2001 and 2002, standard on 2003-2005) AND ABS. If you have Sport brakes without ABS, or ABS without Sport brakes, (or neither), the adjustable proportioning valve kit will decrease your stopping distance (when properly adjusted) by letting you dial in the perfect balance regardless of your car's setup. Only Flyin' Miata offers this option.

Choose red powder coat or hard-anodized in grey for the finish. Both versions are hard-anodized to make the coating very durable and resistant to changes due to temperature, the red version simply has red powder coating over that. It's important to note that the shades of grey will likely not match perfectly. We can't accept returns due to mismatched caliper colors. If you'd like your calipers to match perfectly, please the red powder coat option.

Will they fit your wheels? Probably, if your wheels are 15" or larger, but don't assume - unless you know for sure, please check with our template:

front template

The rear brake setup will fit under every 15" wheel we've come across.

Please make sure you select the correct rear kit for your car - match it to the calipers you already have on the car.

First Purchase From FM But Definitely NOT My Last!

Got this brake kit for my NB2 and am very impressed. I don’t have a garage, just a gravel driveway and not the most skilled mechanic but FM made it easy for me. I had a few hiccups during the install but someone from Flyin’ Miata was quick to respond. I’m also on a budget and doing supporting mods before I turbo.

I know this seems like a lot for brakes but just wait til this kit shows up at your door. You would be hard pressed to find a better deal and from a better company. I already had the sport brakes on my Miata and still made a huge difference. This kit might be overkill for my street build but I live in the hills of southeast, Kentucky and have mountainous twisties for days. A few days after I got the pads bedded in I took my NB off of the 2nd highest mountain in KY and the performance of this kit is mind blowing. I will for sure have FM in my corner throughout my build!
