Air box for Flyin' Miata NA turbo kits (no AFM)
Air box for Flyin' Miata NA turbo kits (no AFM)
Collapsible content
Description
This baffle isolates the intake from the hot air of the engine bay and seals against the hood. Air is pulled from below the headlight instead. Fits all FM turbo kits for the NA chassis with the exception of the 1.6 Stage 1. Might fit other kits, but give everything a thorough look and be prepared for some problem-solving. Our turbo kit installation instructions can be helpful to check everything ahead of time.
Included with all new FM kits where appropriate.

I have a naturally aspirated 91 Miata with a 1.8L swap with stock ECU w/AFM and a skunk2 intake. I have used couplers and some custom intake tubing to run the filter over by the AFM cabling. I wanted a good airbox to separate hot air from the exhaust heat of the engine. I also wanted it to be fed by the intake turn indicators I have. The foil and the insulating foam were great bonuses for that endeavor.
Some things that might be worth considering:
1. Instructions aren’t listed directly on this page. Somehow I missed that it was included in their turbo kit instructions, but it could have been nice to include a link to those instructions here. Because I didn’t find the instructions it took me a bit to figure out how I wanted the rubber seals.
2. The instructions should maybe include information about adding the hush foam and foil tape. I struggled to remove the wax paper protecting the adhesive on the back of the foam. I eventually assumed that the paper didn’t come off and was just part of the product. I later talked with support and found out that the paper does indeed remove from the foam exposing an adhesive layer.
3. It would be cool to see a grommet around the circular cutout where the intake pops through to help better isolate air. I imagine it would look similar to some cable grommets that have the triangle slices to allow cables to pass through a firewall while still maintaining a bit of a seal, or maybe the grommet would stretch around the intake like the rubber does for a brake piston boot.
4. The fin at the end of the intake shield that sits between the radiator and the headlight makes it so you cannot remove the bolt for the radiator. Not a deal breaker but a little annoying since that means you would have to remove the intake shield if you ever needed to remove the radiator. Obviously this is very minor since removing the radiator isn’t necessarily a common thing to do, but since I installed the shield while the engine and radiator were out then I noticed the inconvenience. Also this fin makes it so I the plastic pieces from the hood have to be removed. I wonder if a slightly different bend, or a set of bends, might be able to improve access to the radiator bolt or allow you to keep the plastic on the hood.
5. I wish that the cutout for the intake weren’t so close to the corner. If it can be moved away from the corner a bit that would make fitment for my case a little easier. This is designed for a turbo kit though, and I knew that I would have to iterate my intake path to make this shield work for me. If the hole could be positioned further toward the front of the car, while still working for the turbo kit it was designed for, then it might make it easier for custom/unsupported configurations.
I’ve given this 4 stars because I really think it’s nice to have a good air shield like this one and I’m glad I found it. The foam and the foil make it an even better product. There are some things that I wish it did differently, but again, I knew that I was doing something custom and not technically supported. :)
Wanted to leave a review since I saw another saying it doesn't fit the kraken kit... Well it does! Although flying Miata has an amazing turbo kit (kraken requires a good bit of work) I wanted to be different. They have however been an outstanding resource for parts and phone support. Anyway the part is simple but we'll constructed and showed results. I was amazed it even seals to the hood. IATs down about 10* avg. Don't be that guy and hang your filter off the turbo inlet. Buy this and make it work.
FYI, this does not fit the Kraken kit with EFR6758, the turbo sits too far forward and contacts the corner of the housing.
As noted in the description, this is intended for Flyin' Miata kits, although it can likely be adapted for other kits. We'll update the verbiage to make that more obvious.
