Description
Exclusive to Flyin` Miata and designed specifically for the Mazdaspeed MX-5, this exhaust will improve spoolup and support higher boost levels when paired with our downpipe. We measured a 23 hp and 26 lb-ft increase on our dyno. A handmade muffler allows the exhaust note to be a little deeper and a little louder, but still well behaved. It's the sound the car should have had from the factory! It's also the performance the car should have had from the factory, really.
Adding the exhaust system alone will allow the car to reach peak power 300 rpm sooner than stock and will save 6.5 lbs. Why did we not use the standard Mazda flange locations? Because we found that this design gave better performance and less noise. It's also easier to build. And as a bonus, the whole system has a lifetime warranty. Details.
For Mazdaspeed MX-5 only, not compatible with any other models. Legal in all states, including California. Legal for Solo II in stock class.
The FM midpipe flange and the factory downpipe flange use a different gasket in order to seal the exhaust system. We are aware the seal is not perfect and we found the best seal can be obtained by using the factory donut gasket. This imperfect seal will not be an issue with a Flyin` Miata downpipe. 2.5" piping, 3" polished tip.

I paired this exhaust with my flying miata downpipe. The downpipe quickened my spool by about 500 rpm. The combined exhaust notes are aggressive but not overly "exhausting" (see what I did there?) I think that any enthusiast would be thrilled with the sound and response of the exhaust however, my girlfriend didnt seem to care too much about increased volume or tone. That being said, we can still conversate in the cabin with soft top up, not warm enough for top down yet. With the stock mazdaspeed gearing your revving high at 70mph, it has more audible presence then stock, but no terrible drone.
I’m running an ’04 Mazdaspeed Miata with a stock intake, a previously installed Flyin' Miata downpipe, and now the Flyin' Miata midpipe and exhaust.
Overall, this is a great addition to the car. Honestly, this is how the Mazdaspeed should have sounded from the factory.
When I first installed the Flyin' Miata downpipe, I noticed very little, if any, increase in volume. It essentially sounded the same as stock. However, once I added the Flyin' Miata midpipe and exhaust, the character of the car completely changed.
The sound is much deeper and throatier, especially below about 4000 rpm. Above 4000 rpm, the tone smooths out and becomes more like stock. It is not loud or overbearing in boost. I can clearly hear and enjoy the exhaust note below 4000 rpm, but it never feels obnoxious. In my opinion, it’s the perfect sound level for daily driving.
For perspective, the car came with a Magnaflow axle-back when I purchased it. That setup had a deep tone but was loud, too loud for my taste. It droned heavily between 1500 and 2500 rpm and would actually give me a headache while cruising around town. The Flyin' Miata system is deeper and more refined without the intrusive drone.
For additional context, I’ve run four different exhaust setups on my otherwise stock ’04 Mazdaspeed:
Stock downpipe with stock midpipe and stock exhaust was very quiet.
Flyin' Miata downpipe with stock midpipe and stock exhaust was still very quiet and essentially the same as all stock.
Flyin' Miata downpipe with Flyin' Miata midpipe and Flyin' Miata exhaust produced deeper low notes, a refined tone, and was not obnoxious.
Stock downpipe with stock midpipe and Magnaflow axle-back had a deep tone but was loud, obnoxious, and had noticeable drone between 1500 and 2500 rpm.
As far as installation goes, the Flyin' Miata midpipe and exhaust were relatively easy to install. I put the car on jack stands, removed the bracing that covers the midpipe and the section just before the rear differential (eight bolts), and then removed everything from the exhaust hangers. I used the supplied bung plug on the midpipe with a small amount of anti-seize.
It’s currently in the 50s here in Ohio and I’m still on older all-season tires, so I haven’t spent much time in boost yet. That said, I’m very excited to put some miles on this setup this summer.
Overall, I’m very happy with my decision to upgrade to the Flyin' Miata downpipe, midpipe, and exhaust combination. If you’re looking for a deeper, more refined sound without excessive volume or drone, this setup delivers.
So nice I bought it twice. Both my Mazdaspeed Miatas have this exhaust and the FM downpipe! Can't beat it and it fits great with all the bracing.
Amazing tune! Not too loud and sounds beautiful
Awesome upgrade! The cat-back part of the whole system made a noticeable improvement in performance. The exhaust note is nice and low as well. Since I'm in California I can't get the downpipe/cat but my friend in Kentucky reports it really does let the turbo spool up quicker. And!! There is a little bit of burble as the revs drop down to idle. So cool! The best part of this upgrade is it got rid of all my grey hair and I have become much more attractive.
If you're in Cali or other restricted state, and are interested in getting CARB to issue an EO, ask FM for the template I sent them for contacting your elected representative. Good luck!!
