Description
The Miata has always had one of the best feeling shifters on the planet. But as they get older, some of the components start to wear and it slowly loses precision. You might not even notice, but it's not what it was. Luckily, it's easy to rebuild, and you can access everything from inside the car.
This kit includes all the pieces you need to make your shifter feel new again. All internal components are factory Miata parts, the boot is a high-quality aftermarket equivalent.
For 1994-96 transmissions.
Includes:
small shift boot (R501-17-47Z) lower shift bushing (0398-17-462A) upper shifter pivot ball bushing (R502-17-492) smooth wave washer (8599-17-482) tabbed wave washer (M505-17-482) lower shifter pivot ball bushing (M501-17-481) upper ball alignment bushing (M501-17-515) shifter shim x 2 (9996-33-330)

Quick delivery.. great product.. perfect!. Also... great customer support and information.. by REAL people!
Did this on our '95 NA along with a new larger shifter boot (was torn) plus insulation and new fluid (MTL now... don't know what it was before). TBH, my wife said the shifter was fine before- not great, not bad. This was more of a birthday present than a real need.
She says it's much better now, and feels like new. Neutral feels like a real spot now, instead of vaguely "in the center-ish". Shifts are smoother and inspire more confidence. It was definitely worth it.
I didn't know the status of the existing shifter internals... it was more of a "hey this might be cool" / easy project type of present. It turns out in our case the shifter *was* in pretty bad shape. Our small shift boot was completely torn, and the large one wasn't much better. One of the wave washers was broken in half. The fluid was dark brown / gray. The insulation was almost nothing. The nylon pieces were all intact, although we didn't compare to the replacements to look for wear. Presumably they were original or at least very old, given the state of the rest of the shifter.
Replacing the boots is probably a big reason why neutral feels so much better now- new rubber naturally helps center the lever. We presume new nylon bushings and the replacement wave washer accounts for the other overall improved feel.
It would be nice if FM could update the description or instructions with some guidance on the "adjust" / spacer washers. Ours had one installed originally so we just kept it that way. I'm not sure how significantly 0 or 2 would affect things. Presumably 0 would make shifts feel softer and 2 would feel firmer, but we haven't tested.
Install would have taken less than 10 minutes but I broke a bolt for the big shift boot. Highly suggest replacing the big boot as well. Between the fresh oil, the new bushings and the new shift boots it made the world of difference in the car.
I didn't realize how much I needed this kit until I started the installation. Several parts on my '94 shifter had disintegrated. Thankfully, this kit along with the installation video made the process easy.
Made my 13 year old watch the install video 2x and read the instructions....he executed with ease. Shifter is back to the way it should be !
Also grab the insulation kit ...night and day difference
Thank you Flyin' Miata
