Description
This little tool will let you change out valve springs and valve seals without removing the head. It's a great way to deal with a set of leaky seals, for example. Oil smoke on idle and overrun? Easy fix.
How about a new set of valve springs? Now you can swap those out without pulling the head off as well.
It's designed specifically for the NA/NB Miata and bolts on to the head. The valve is held open by a screw so you have both hands to work.
You will need to prevent the valve from falling out of the head. You can use a leakdown tester to provide air pressure in the cylinder or you can feed rope down the spark plug hole so it piles up on the piston and supports the valve.
Please note that the valve keepers can get bonded to the valve spring seat, meaning that things won't come apart as intended if you simply compress the spring. If you force it, you'll damage the tool, which isn't covered under warranty. As long as you follow the included instructions, you'll be fine. Seriously, please do this first.
Fits all NA and NB Miatas as well as other Mazda B6 1.6L & BP 1.8L engines.

If you’re only interested in fixing Mazdas, this tool is worth the extra investment vs a standard Valve Compressor tool, which might be a little cheaper, but certainly about 3x the effort to use. Where you’d typically fatigue fighting 16 valves, a drill and socket make this quick work.
If you have the budget for the “hammer-based” valve keeper tool, this is a much more consistent tool for reinstalling valve keepers reliably. Using a thick plastic between the valve keeper top and the “press tool” will help keep the keepers in place with even pressure.
If you have the budget for both the “hammer based” tool and this, it’s the fastest combo. Hammer-based tool for removal and this for installation.
If I had to pick one, this would be it. If I could feedback, it’d be to proved two bolts, so I could jump to each valve quickly.
Not only did this work on my Miata, but worked on my Protege as welll.
I used this tool to remove the valves from my cylinder head with it removed from the vehicle. I used wooden blocks to support the valves from the bottom side and it worked beautifully. In my opnion better than a traditional valve spring tool even if the head is removed.
Absolutely amazing though wish the grease packet for the Jack bolt was resealable but very easy to use fits and works perfectly used on my 93 1.6
You need this tool if you’re gonna do this job it’s worth the money,, and I like the design, you can do two springs at once.
Was exactly what I needed to replace my valve stem seals
