Your NA or NB Miata came with insulation around the shifter because Mazda knew it was a good idea - there's a lot of noise and heat that can come in through there, and some insulation is a great way to lessen it. However, that stock insulation doesn't stay together particularly well and it's not exactly new at this point. Best case, you have some scraps left, worst case, it's missing altogether. We worked with our friends at DEI to come up with this replacement. It uses their "Under Carpet Lite" insulation - it's a multi-layer composite material that minimizes heat transfer and deadens sound. Similar to the stock part, but much better! Easy install, just remove the center console, clean up the remaining shreds, and slip this into place. Includes two pieces to go around the shift boot and two pieces to go on top of it to maximize its effectiveness.

If you are restoring an older Miata this insulation along with a new rubber boot will do a surprising amount of good to reduce not only the heat that comes off of the transmission, but also the sound inside the cabin. It makes the ride much more comfortable.
This kit is amazing. I didn't realize how much noise I had it the cabin until I installed this kit.And I didn't have a complaint about it before. Also,after driving in town & on the highway there is an almost imperceptable amount of heat on the shifter or shifter boot.I almost didn't buy it as I felt i really only needed the shifter rebuild kit.but since I was already going to be in there i thought why not. Well it made such a difference that I may add more insulation to other parts of the interior later.Thanks

I installed this insulation kit while I was rebuilding the shifter. The car seems a bit cooler with the insulation and a new boot. One thing I did notice is that there was a bit more resistance when shifting until this seemed to wear in a bit.
The insulation around my shifter had fallen apart and was not all there. This kit provides more insulation than stock and tucks in nicely.
