Description
The problem with exhaust systems is that they're either loud or quiet. And sometimes you want one and not the other. Meet the first active exhaust for the Miata! They're popping up on high end cars all over the place.
At idle and light throttle, the exhaust stream is routed through an effective muffler that keeps the sound levels low. Very comfortable and neighbourhood-friendly.
But when you dip deeper into the throttle pedal, a butterfly opens to allow the exhaust to route through a different, less muffled, path in the muffler. This cuts down on restriction and you can hear the car respond to your extra enthusiasm. When you want it loud, it's loud. Never obnoxiously so (we're never bypassing the muffler entirely), but sporty. The butterfly mechanism is an OE-quality part with a very long lifespan.
We also have a CAN integration package for the 2016-2023 Miatas that allows you to change the behavior of the exhaust on the fly by simply twisting a dial. You can change from always loud to always quiet or set the percentage of throttle needed to open the valve.
As with all of our exhausts, this system carries a lifetime warranty for the original owner on the mechanical parts.
We cannot give a specific decibel rating for this exhaust, as that depends on the measuring technique as well as other modifications on the car. If you are competing in a noise-sensitive facility and are having trouble with noise levels, it's possible to change the muffler over to the "always quiet" mode quickly and easily. That will drop sound levels to just a bit over the stock muffler.
Compatible with our Hard Dog "Hideaway" hitch as well as automatic NDs.
*Due to the design and operation of the butterfly valve used in the Hush-O-Matic muffler, the valve may experience a slight vibrational noise at the point of closure. This typically happens at small throttle openings, however in most cases there are little to no noticeable effects. The CAN control system eliminates the chance of this noise, as the valve is always fully opened or fully closed, and never held in-between.

Second Miata with this exhaust. Absolutely mates perfectly. Sound is phenomenal!
I just purchased my 2nd ND (4th Miata in total). My first one (2020 GT) got totaled over Memorial Day weekend. I had a Helmholtz Chamber design twin tip muffler on that one. Sound was good but a little loud at times. Although the design was supposed to eliminate it, it had a drone sound at certain RPMs. Upon purchasing my 2025 Club w/Brembo, I decided to try the FM Hush-O-Matic. Absolutely amazing sound! Not only does the sound level vary based on your foot (big smile), but the sound is amazing. It has a tuned sound that you'd expect from the high end sports car. I expected the same basic sound as my last exhaust, BUT NO. It's truly awesome sounding and worth the money. If you're even thinking about it, go for it. You won't be sorry. As I have a 2025, can't use optional CAN control. Who cares! This muffler is great (and I do enjoy the extra 230HP - thanks David M. -- Disclaimer, also kidding about the HP)
Very easy to install **with the CAN bus integration kit!** The included install location to get vacuum off the back of the intake manifold sucks to install. Cramped space and the included tube is so incredibly tight to install on the manifold (even lubricated). The entire CAN kit install is easier than putting on that thing on!
Onto the muffler, it looks spectacular. Sounds deep and throaty with no nasty rasp. It’s much quieter than I was expecting, even wide open. Looking forward to getting a midpipe to make things flow better and get a little more sound.
Great sound, pretty easy install (have the CAN integration).
Since I bought my ND2 miata I been wanting to make my ride sound “more loud”. I looked into different reviews and different sites for different exhausts, that’s when I came across Flyin Miata’s Hush-O-Matic and seen it has the CAN controller. At first, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to install everything myself, however i still made my purchase. As soon as I received the exhaust itself I noticed it being very well polished, with high quality welds. With proper tools like exhaust hanger clamps, the installation itself was fairly easy, me and my younger brother put on the exhaust & CAN controller in about 3ish hours, but im sure it can done faster. The hardest part of the installation was feeding the rubber vacuum hose from exhaust to engine bay. If you have the controller, then other hard part with controller installation is feeding the long red wire from the harness to the solenoid. You have to poke a hole through the rubber where the oem wires feed and it can be tricky. I made a home made punch with a small hook at the end and put the wire around hook & pierced if through, once i was able to see the punch from the engine bay i pulled carefully, but forcefully and the wire fed through. I have little to no experience with wiring, but with the updated version, it’s mainly plug & play, And only needs to connect 2 wires which was simple. My exhaust is running smooth and sounds not too loud but just right, in my opinion it sounds more aggressive and now with the controller I am able adjust the sound back to about the stock exhaust noise, pretty cool stuff FM. The photo below is the comparison compared to the stock.
