Description
Our timing belt kit is a little more expensive because it includes the tensioner and idler pulleys. We find that almost every Miata needs new ones when doing a timing belt. It also includes the timing belt (made by Continental), cam seals, front crank seal, a valve cover gasket, thermostat neck O-ring and a CAS O-ring. Accessory belts sold separately. Don't get caught on a Saturday afternoon without parts you need!
This kit does not include a new tensioner spring, as it doesn’t need to be replaced. The tensioner spring doesn’t move back and forth during normal operation, it just pulls the tensioner pulley into the correct position during installation – it could actually be removed once the tensioner bolt has been tightened. Therefore, the spring isn’t fatigued and doesn’t need to be replaced.
This kit is for the "long nose" 1.6 engines, with an eight-slot front crank pulley and a VIN higher than 209446.
We also have a full tool kit to help make this easier for you.

New to me car so decided to just do it all. Guides and manuals I had purchased before helped, along with the ninja tool kit. Followed the advice and replaced the water pump at the same time, along with the thermostat. Did all three seals, because if you're in there, you'd might as well. Took a little longer, as I needed to order and replace the timing belt covers (an overzealous previous mechanic had been a little rough and cracked them - chewed up by pulleys).
Everything I needed to replace my timing belt, and then some - I left my front crank seal alone since I have no evidence of leaks and prefer not to deal with getting the crank gear off if I don't have to. Valve cover gasket was branded "kibi" and made in Japan. I did not experience any issues with the tab on the tensioner pulley, as reported by another reviewer. I ordered the water pump at the same time, and as noted for that kit, I did find the belt a little tight installing it onto the gears, but not enough to prevent it going on. I didn't need to clearance anything.
I took my car into my automotive class to get help doing the timing belt because I've never done one before. I've ordered two of these kits because my first installation wasn't correct. One thing I noticed is the tensioner pulleys bracket casting (the shaft that isn't holding the spring) is bent and doesn't reach the little shaft its supposed to sit on. This has been the case with both kits. It doesn't look to be sheered off or anything and every other tensioner pulley I've seen isn't bent. Outside of that this kit has been good. I'm still having trouble getting the belt to not rub, but I'll get it worked out at some point.
Thanks for your review, Khalel! We're not sure what is going on with the tensioner pulleys you've received - the bent tab is a new issue we haven't heard of before. Please call/email our Customer Support Team directly so we can help you get it sorted out.
Haven't installed yet but shipping was quick (and free) and package was intact. Only complaint I could have was that the valve cover gasket was folded in half but that is miniscule.
