I had been thinking about adding a shock tower strut bar to reduce the cowl shake in my '91 NA with stock suspension, especially when I have the hardtop off. I investigated a number of options from various dealers, but like the Flyn Miata one when I saw it at the Miata Reunion at Sonoma Raceway. It was 'out of stock' when I tried to order it a few months ago, but did not get notified when it became available again with a slight price incease.
When I placed my order, and thanks to your quick shipping, it arrived just before the BAMA Halloween cruise. Having already read the installation notes, it was a simple bolt on with everything fitting nicely. Rerouting the cruise control cable was simple once I pulled back the rubber boot to see the cable end was like a bicycle brake cable barrel end. Leaving the inside nut nut untouched and loosening the outter nut to disconnect the cable to keep the adjustment. No fitting issue under the hood. I was ready to test the bar in the next morning cruise.
Driving to the meeting point, I first noticed the front end felt more solid going over the road bumps. The beauty of this simple mod was apprent in the hilly, twisty section of our cruise. The cowl shake was gone when I drove over bumps as specially in those tight turns. The car turned where I pointed it too and made a big difference to my stock suspension. The only other mod I had were the stiffer blocks in the door frames to stiffen up the body. I am VERY happy with this Flyn Miata shock tower struct bar!!
Here are a few pictures of the installation, and a roadside shot from the cruise. My stock '91 NA defintely drive better with the addition of the Flyn Miata shock tower struct bar. THANK YOU!!
This made a big difference in the rigidity of the car. I'm glad I purchased it.
I have a 99 base model so mine didn't come with the brace, made a big difference.
Fit my 94 V8 LS swapped Miata with room to spare! I had a Cusco strut tower bar before and it just barely cleared my ABS brake lines. I wanted to add a brake pedal brace but it would be impossible. Noticed FM had updated their bar and would now also allow integration of their brake brace. I patiently waited months for it to come back in stock and ordered it as soon as it did along with the brake brace. Arrived well packed in its own individual box. Install was easy, clears my ABS brake lines and cruise control cable goes through one of the braces allowing it to stay in the OEM location.
I would definitely recommend it.
I was using one of those "E-Bay" bars and it did help to some degree. The car felt a little stiffer and the turn in was a little better. However the change to the FM shock tower brace is a major improvement. Now there is almost no judder from the front end when one wheel hits a pot hole. Turn in and S curve transitions are very sharp. Also, the 65 mph shimmy is finally gone.
It will stiffen up the ride somewhat. I guess because the "compliance" (i.e. flex) between the shock towers is gone. I had to back off the shocks 2 clicks to their softest setting to keep from getting bounced out of my seat by the pogo-ing from the badly poured pavement sections on our local stretch of I-10. That's either good or bad depending on your situation.
