Their combination of ride height - giving the suspension room to work - and spring rate means your Miata will ride and handle better than you would expect from a set of performance springs.

There's more going on than you think, though. See that section with the tighter coils? Those are designed to act as a secondary spring, keeping the spring from going loose under full droop. While these rates might sound high compared to some other springs on the market, they are stiff enough to keep your car off the bumpstops. Softer springs will often give a worse ride because they allow you to blow through your suspension travel and end up on the stops. We've specified a powdercoat with a high zinc content for extra corrosion resistance, too.

How much will they lower your car? We can't tell you, because Mazda changed the ride height of Miatas over the years. The spring rates of our springs are high enough that the extra 80 lbs doesn't make a significant difference. It's what cushions your car on the big bumps when you get to the end of your suspension travel. It's basically the last part of your suspension travel. Miatas - especially NAs and NBs - spend a lot of time on their bumpstops, so they're a pretty important part of the suspension.

Strongly recommended for all 1990-97 Miatas - the stock bumpstops are terrible. The stock bumpstops on NB and NC Miatas are similar to these, but suffer degradation with time and can actually crumble to dust. Swapping in a set of these stops on the rear of an early ND will give improved travel and decrease the chance of snap oversteer. It's not a track setup, although you certainly can do autocross and track days on them.

Similar to systems used on some high-dollar coilovers, there's a secondary oil passage inside the shock that allows the shock to have higher damping with slow wheel movement and softer damping for rapid movements. Koni calls this Frequency Selective Damping, since the shock is actively adjusting the damping level depending on the frequency of the movement. It's almost a self-adjusting shock. This means that the shock can move quickly and easily to absorb bumps, but helps resist the slower body movements that are involved in handling. The idea is that you have good body control with the best ride possible.

They're not well suited to higher rate performance springs as they don't have enough damping to control the higher spring rates. Think of them as a higher end self-adjusting alternative to a set of Koni STR.T shocks. Depending on how much damping you like in your suspension, you may prefer the Koni Sport with its adjustable damping - in our head to head testing, the FM staff were split on their preference when matched with stock springs.
