The Ubercharger supercharger, unleashed.

It's been a long development process, but we think it's been worth the wait. We have developed our Ubercharger supercharger to the point where we are confident to put the Flyin' Miata name on it. We have designed it to be reasonably priced, safe for your engine and with a huge amount of power potential. We would not release this kit until we were happy with how the car drove. You can see some of the development process here. This system runs transparently and has the drivability of a stock Miata, yet tends to turn unsuspecting drivers into hooligans, due to the sheer amount of low and mid-range torque. You have been warned!

All Uberchargers use a 1.2l Whipple twin-screw supercharger, chosen for its high efficiency and power potential. The supercharger sits on a cast aluminum manifold on the "cold" or intake side of the engine. The cold-side mounting allows for better weight distribution, the freedom to use a wide variety of headers and isolation from engine heat. It also allows throttled volume to be kept to a minimum. The blower is driven by a dedicated 6-rib belt to minimize slippage and a bypass valve is used to maintain off-boost efficiency. All kits are designed to be used on engines with stock internals unless boost levels are changed.

An aluminum air/air intercooler is included in the U2 and U3. This intercooler has been designed for maximum cooling with minimal pressure drop. The increase in throttled volume is minimal - it takes the blower approximately two engine revolutions to fill the intercooler and piping. That's only 0.04 seconds at 3000 rpm. Non-intercooled kits have been designed to be easily upgraded with the intercooler.

There are two options available for engine management. The 1994-97 U3 uses the well-known plug-in Flyin' Miata Link engine management system that has been tuned specifically for supercharger use. This allows typical supercharger foibles such as high idle and droop to be eliminated. Full control over the engine is available. This engine management and supercharger combination has the potential for very high engine output. This kit is also available without any engine management at all for those who already have an ECU in their car. The U3 will not be taken through the CARB certification process although it will pass a tailpipe test in any state.

The U1 and U2 models use a newly-developed system that is both simple and effective - the Flyin' Miata Voodoo Box. No extra chicken bones required as everything is included. The stock injectors are retained. Under boosted conditions, the injector pulse is modified to deliver more fuel. The O2 sensor signal is also modified to prevent the dangerous lean condition that is common with similar designs when the stock computer is in closed-loop operation. The U1 and U2 models will be eligible for CARB certification in the future. We do not have a timetable for this at the moment.

Unless otherwise noted, power outputs are estimates.

Dyno runs:

13 psi U3 Ubercharger on a 1995. Stock engine, stock header, high-flow cat, FM single naturally aspirated exhaust. Dyno runs do not show the feel of this setup - the low-end grunt and linearity encourages drivers to really fling the car around. We expect to extract more performance from this setup with more tuning.

8 psi U2 Ubercharger on a 1999. Stock engine, stock header, FM single naturally aspirated exhaust and midpipe. The supercharger is almost silent at full throttle. We're very happy about this result.

Photos (more coming soon once we clean the car up!)

Video - 745 KB Quicktime movie from inside the car as it runs through the gears. It's not a high point in cinematic history but it's still strangely compelling. This is a run from a stop to about 100 mph.

Audio - 230 KB recording from inside the car as it runs through the gears. This is the audio track from the video. The car is running a stock header and FM single NA exhaust.
